Nikki loves flowers. Raised by the Family of assassins, she would rather spend her time drawing roses. At the tender age of five, she doesn’t understand that her mother has died, that her uncle is abandoning her.

Set in the post-apocalyptic Dry World, “Wildflower” is a short story that blends child abandonment with hope. When Nikki meets an unlikely companion in a weathered bounty hunter—the future protagonist of Where The Skye Fell—she learns that there is warmth in unlikely places. That flowers can bloom in deserts.
